I wish I could go to Les Gobelins :( They're bloody amazing.
edit Finished watching the Pyrats. It's just unbelievable how a bunch of students can make better animations than many professional studios.
edit 2 Haha, I've actually talked to the girl who designed most of the characters in "Sebastian". Thanks for posting these NOOB!, it seems I haven't watched them yet.

One of these days someone needs to teach me how to texture 3D to make them look like 2D. The town homes in Pirates looks amazing as the fight is taking place.

hi there
just want to say thank you about your greetings for our movie pyrats
some of you are asking about the 3d part and the render ... that was made using camera mapping in maya ...camera mapping is kind of a projector ,I painted a background that I projected using a camera in maya directly on the polygons ...cool thing is that it really look like 2d ,bad thing it's really painful to use
anyway ,I'm pleased you liked it
NOOB!
06-14-2006, 01:51 AM
yeh i've tried that in maya b4,pretty annoying.
I'm interested to know where you guys used flash? I can't really tell, was it used just for the planning?
thanks for stopping by ben

elephant>thanks...part of gobelins ? I think it's the best school where I could have express myself ,that's it :)
noob> flash was used for making shadows of few scenes and the blood-FX at the last scene ... it was also used for making the very first animatic ... it's a tool that Yves is more convenient with

Thanks for answering my 3D question. Now I have another one. What was the inspiration behind Pyrats.
I don't mean to pry, it's just that it has that old school feel that I love so much.
It reminds me of the "Monkey Island" Lucas Art games the first time I laid eyes on it. You guys really put in a lot of work into making sure the detail fit. Great work indeed.
Where did the idea come from? What did you guys use for reference and inspiration?

terro> the inspiration? it was exactly last year at the same date ...we were in the annecy 2005 festival drinking a coffee with nicolas and we were thinking what kind of movie we could do for annecy 2006 (also as a student end of studies short) ...and he told me : "I have something in mind ,I would really love to make pirates ..." .....I was instantly seduced by the idea and giving him back a lot of concepts of pirates I wanted to see too... we submit to the others and they approved with enthusiasm
before that ,we had few other ideas but they were not as cool as some pirates attacking a fortress:)
I guess the principal inspiration was to make a movie that we would really want to wach as a spectator and have fun with.
3 of the members are really attached to the disney old school animation ,that's why we choose that style of design, animation and bg.... for the backgrounds ,we wanted to have something very mediteranean / spanish style on an island (especially because that was conquistadors who implanted there)
and lucasarts did the best games ever
noob> we're still at school till end of june ,they're very busy because we have to prepare portfolios and demoreels for professionnals ...I'm here because I take care of the website and people reffering to it.
I hope we could one day make a movie again,as free as we were

fikey.....are these similar techniques/or are they the techniques you used for the houses in the fight scene
http://www.digitalartform.com/archives/2004/11/camera_projecti_1.html
http://www.a3d.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/maya/camera_projection.html
its a pretty amazing technique (goes to try, can't believe i've been sruggling to create something similar for so long now)
when i was watching juliens behind the scenes stuff i saw frames like this

You guys also drew out colour guides for each frame??!!

Thanks for the answers Ben. Your work is really insperational :)
How hard was it co-ordinating all the different animators, because it almost looks like each animator had there own charactor(s) that they where most involved with.
ALso, what fps where you working at, and any animated advice for the forum?

Why use camera mapping (photogrammetry?) for a painted background? Why not texture it traditionally and just have painterly textures?
NOOB!
06-15-2006, 02:01 PM
jack,it would be cos u wouldn't have to deal with lighting and all other issues, since the lighting is already in the projected image...i think...
fikey
06-15-2006, 02:21 PM
oh so much questions!!!
noob & jack>yeah ,that's exactly this technique ...I used it because it's the best way for directly paint the background without thinking about textures or UV mapping
as you can see here ,a uv mapping is something very flat ,it's very hard to paint the geometry
http://joepekar.com/gallery/albums/album04/SoldierTextureMap.jpg
so I've paint something like that , similar to any backgrounds I've made for the movie ,I don't have to worry about edges or uv
http://www.digitalartform.com/archives/images/forBox.jpg
I used 4 cameras for each block of houses
simon>I think that was the most difficult part ,to coordinate each style of animation .We animate the scenes we wanted the most ,not by characters ...and you can see that model of every character is changing a little bit between scenes:(
ALso, what fps where you working at
sorry I don't understand ,my english is not as good as I would
, and any animated advice for the forum?
I'm just a student you know ,I have so much to learn before teachings some advices in animation
elephant>nicolas and me are currently trying to make a new personal project but I can't tell about it yet (and not before a year I think)

Wow, just wow. That stuff is amazing, fresh, but nostalgic all the same. I really missed full features like this. I just re-watched The Great Mouse Detective, chilling feature for a Disney cartoon, truly poignant stuff.
I might sound ignorant asking this, but where in France is Gobelins situated (for I assume it's France, else Wallony)? And Noob, you know I could always offer up a few lessons en Français if you ever need to, say, pay a visit to the Gobelins campus. That's the perk to being a half-frog, I can wander regions of Belgium and France and communicate... though I get dirty looks in Paris and the Côte D'Azur because of my lame Canadian accent.
Man, I can't stop watching the stuff, it's really damn... amazing, and inspirational.

I once purchased Body Paint 2, from Maxon, it's like photoshop but for UV textures. It allows you to paint directly on the model it self, in multiple layers at the same time. So you can knock out the Bump Map, Reflections and the texture with the same stroke. Needless to say, I still found it more confusing then taking a UV map into photoshop, lol.

BTW: Since this thread was originated by Noob we had no one to give the Talent Award too, since then Fikey was kind enough to join us and do a little Q&A.
This is indeed a great work of art and you guys deserve a ton of props, but we can only affor to give you guys 2 http://www.animationforum.net/forum/images/awards/silver.gif Silver Point over here at AF and plug your animation into our banner rotation.
So thank you for the great show and congratulations.
Note: We have added your username to our Award Log. http://www.animationforum.net/forum/showthread.php?t=631

Like Kave said, Fps is Frames Per Second.
Yes i can see that styles do change around, but it ceratinly doesn't detract from the animation. The fact that you can find faults with such a good animation, means you can only get better! :)

that's one of the best compliment I've ever heard
terro>thanks a lot ,I was not hoping for 2 silvers medals in coming here:)
we worked at 25fps especially for the sound design... the softwares used for the sound are set for a better quality at 25fps ,and it's now a "standart" in video edition... at the beginning ,the movie should have been in 35mm format which is at 24fps ,so we should have use a stretching-trick for passing it from 25 to 24 ....but the school decided to not put in 35mm for economical reasons (3000 $ a copy in 35mm)
and gobelins is situed in the center of paris
I have to leave you now ,I'm going to watch the match between france and corea ....GO FRAAANCE:)

Hey Fikey,
I've sent you a personal message via AWN; I suppose you haven't read it yet.
I really like to know, how you did the shadows on the characters, cause in the linetests of your making of I saw no shadow-lines.
Did you animate them on extra-sheets??
Greetz and best wishes from Worldcup-crazy Germany
fikey
06-20-2006, 02:27 PM
noob>for the 3d camera moves ,we printed every frames of the 3d layout and we used it as a base for 2d animation
bandita> sorry I didn't login on awn for a long time . For the shadows , we drew every shadows on extra sheets ....except for few scenes ,we used flash for few shadows
I didn't saw you at the auberge at annecy ,you should have come to see us.
for the worldcup ,I think we have the worst team ever (and the worst coach ever ) ... I will encourage germany now :D
Henry and Zidane were crap. I hear Zidane is finishing soccer. Shame:(

Amazing and inspiring work fellas. :)
Final kick in the arse to finally build myself some real animation gear and stop neglecting my traditional animation.
Tip about the moving camera and 2d characters though, i usually find it helps a whole bunch for more advanced scenes if i put cubes in to the reference material representing the paths and positions of the characters so i can make sure there isn't any drifting, but i'm amazed how well you did without any markers of that sort.
Thank you so much for this amazing piece you guys produced, so many factors of it are part of what i aspire to be and being able to see that in motion is indescribable.
Looking forward to seeing and hearing more from you.

I had a few questions for Fikey whenever he get's the chance to answer.
So I see that you guy's used CTP in your workflow for the film. In what manner was the sofware used? Pencil test? Painting? Etc.
The reason why am asking is two fold. Did you find that working with CTP very simple to use and would you recommend it for pencil tests and painting? Because I'm looking to purchase it over Digicel Flipbook.
Thanks and keep up the old school tradition….just awesome work!

i don't think fikey is gunna return anytime soon to be honest mesh, they used a mixture of photoshop and ctp for the paint jobs on the chracters and bgs.
