Okay, I just upgraded from MX to Flash8. In flash 8 the lines are jagged when using the pencil tool. The first image is with Flash MX, the second with Flash 8. Same settings. What gives with version 8?

When you select the line tool in Flash 8 there's an option for smoothness in the properties.

Try that Vic. I don't have MX anymore so I can't compare but it looks a little better. Another trick is after you're done drawing. convert your lines to fills and that makes them smoother anyway.

I tried the smoothness settings and it didn't make any difference. I can't even imagine changing all lines to fills, it just defeats the purpose of using lines. The filters are great as are a couple of other options, but that's about it! I guess I'll just use flash 8 for applying filters then import them to flash mx. A rather large pain-in-the-ass if you ask me.

Thanks for the advice Dipwilly. Very much appreciated.:D

i meant drawing all your object out in lines then when you get ready to publish. go through the symbols and convert to fills. If you take a look at a line when you zoom in and out it keeps the same thickness, but if you switch to fill it zooms in and out more naturally.

I convert all my lines to fill anyways. Usually. sometimes I forget :)

Flash Mx doesn't open in Flash 5. Grr those silly programmers not seeing in the future and allowing frontwards compatability... :)

Anyway I did a quick test.(excuse the wiggle to my lines I don't use this tool very often :-/ ) My lines turned out alright. I'm set to 2 but I'm sure at 1 they'd be fine as well. There must be some other option you accidently hotkeyed Vic. Flash is all about smooth lines. I can't imagine the developers letting something like that slip through testing. but that's just me.

Edit: Had this thought. Is your jpeg exporting set to 100 image quality on Flash 8? Might be something you forgot to do when updating. Just a thought.

Bummer, can't import from flash 8?? Damn. Oh well.
Dipwilly, I forgot to at least mention that the two diagrams are screenshots and not exports.

When I publish a line drawing, the export looks okay, that is, very smooth. It's when I'm drawing that bugs me. I don't want to publish a whole clip just to see how smooth it turned out.

Oh, and when I test scene, it looks fine too. No google results for the problem either. Grrrrr!!!! Gotta be something simple!!!!

Well does it do it for ONLY the pencil tool? if you use the line tool or ink bottle tool does it look jagged still?

Yup, just the pencil tool. The ink bottle and line tool come out smooth. Like I said, if I use control/test scene, it looks perfect. I just hate the results of the pencil line as I'm drawing. It's really frustrating!

Gah, why use the pencil tool in the first place?

Um..are ya serious?

Anyway, here's a kicker; I drew some lines in Flash 8, saved it as an MX file, (oh yes you can) opened it in MX and the lines were still jagged. That ain't the kicker, when I used the pencil tool on that document (in MX) those lines were jagged too!!!!???? When I opened a new document, they were smooth again.

I think I may have thought up a solution. I could look for Flash 8 in my control panel under "remove programs"!!

Version 8 sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I can't stand the pencil in Flash at all. Somehow the brush tool works out better for me. :p

Vic, wait, wait! Don't give up on Flash 8 yet! Not that I am promoting that version, but I know what is causing all this jagged lines in your drawings. We used to encounter such a problem in Flash, even way back in Flash MX. Here is what you need to do:

In Flash 8 (or MX or Pro) Go to View > Preview Mode > select Anti-Alias Text. That actually is the default mode. Yours is accidentally set to Fast. You may have accidentally set that mode while doing some keyboard shortcuts (usually happens with me when I am in a hurry).

So make sure the Preview Mode is set to Anti-Alias Text, the default setting. I hope this helps and solves your problem.
