I told you guys before that I work on a wooden barrel, lol. Heres the proof. It, s a real hand made oak cask that me and my father in law turned into a bar/table by request of my wife :) Somehow I got stuck with it as my desk. Not to comfy , but pretty cool and stocked with liquer.

Holy crap Greg, isn't it dangerous to keep all that alcohol so close? At least you don't have to get up to go to the grog cabinet XD
Love the concept though.

Edit: since this topic has been resurrected, I guess I'll update mine, just because I got a new lightdesk and moved things to make more space.

Those are great Amanda. I dig your studio layout. I have never worked on a dual monitor setup, I need to look into the benefits of it, a lot of artists seem to go that way. What are the advantages? I checked out your site, love the pirate man/woman illustration.

It's a matter of multitasking, really. That's why I have two anyway. You can have applications, windows, and palettes on spread over both screens, gives a helluva lot more space to work with.

 Wow, bleu (Amanda?), I would love a work station like that. Right now mine looks a little like Vics but without the bars. I'll post one a little later. But a question for you bleu:

You obviously do this for a living, don't you? What have you worked on?

That's actually two questions, isn't it?

Three now, actually!

It's not a living, Daft... I'm still only a wannabe-aspiring animator (student), like (I hopefully assume correctly) most of the other peeps on this board. Just spent years and years building up my own studio due to odd jobs and good fortune, that's all. When not studying, it's mostly web design and illustration hack work.
But being anything more than that is going to take a long time.
This place is where I spend most of my time. It's gotta be comfortable :P

Behind me and I can't get a good light on is my lightbox. Atleast not for my crappy camera. Just looks like a blue glow when it's on. Either way. That's where I work. With sketches pinned on the wall above my computer and a CTRLALTDEL poster on the left.

So here's my room:

http://www.freewebtown.com/rageartworks/Images/P4050054_2.jpg

My desk has an iMac on it, and even to my standard the desk is messy. Oh my God, no TABLET?
Nope. I'm more of a traditional kind of guy, PLUS, my Wacom Volito doesn't work on Mac. At least the pressure-sensitivity doesn't. My keyboard is on the ground because in this picture my mother is opening a closest, and the keyboard was standing against the door of that closet, and you see, with a big keyboard like that in front of it you can't open a door, even if there's a closet behind it. Isn't that interesting? To me it is. Oh yes it is. I think I'll quit that closet thing right now. On to the next picture.

http://www.freewebtown.com/rageartworks/Images/P4050055.jpg

Top left: A sort of mini-desk with a printer-scanner-thing on it, and a candy-box that's been there for about five years.
Middle: That's my new guitar. It looks a bit like a Fender Stratocaster. Actually it's a complete clone, just cheaper, as it came with an amp and a bag and stuff... Trying to learn guitar more and more seriously. Guitar-lessons just don't work for me. It's just something I like to do, but nothing really serious. So Guitar for Dummies, is helping a lot, hehe. It's really a great book.
Top right: That used to be a chair once. Now it's basically covered with my clothes, so it's hardly a chair in 'look-I'm-sitting-on-a-chair' kind of way.. Don't feel like doing anything about it.

http://www.freewebtown.com/rageartworks/Images/P4050056.jpg

Top left: TV that I never use.
Middle: My own self-made animation desk. And a wall with papers on it.
Almost-bottom right: Some drumkit thing with small notebooks on it. I've been trying to record a proper breakbeat for a long time, but I always hit the pads so hard that they hardly react to anything I do now.

So this is where I work, and basically spend all my time. As much as I can. My parents are absolutely obsessed with 'family life' and 'socializing' and all. It's crazy.

That's one swanky spesh looking setup, Will.

I LOL'd at those shots, Rage.
It's just a really familiar scene with the computer and instruments and chaos about the place. People I've known who are musos with their spare bedrooms/loungerooms turned into studios, theirs have been far more chaotic though, because there's vinyls and cds everywhere too.

I dig your animation desk!
But doesn't it hurt your back leaning over much?

I actually DO have CD's lying around everywhere, but they're mostly covered with the rest of the mess.
Yeah, I'm proud of my desk. I am, SUCH, a genius. I never seize to amaze myself. :D J/K
But no it doesn't really hurt my back. I did at first, but I taught myself to sit up straight automatically. Your mind becomes sleepy when you sit back. Keeping your back straight by yourself helps you concentrate and stay awake.

I'm selling three pretty cool traditional animation desks with light disks. They are made of heavy-duty pressed wood and have four adjustable shelves. Each desk is valued at $3000, but I'll take a reasonable Best Offer, with special consideration for purchase of two or more. They are available for pick up in Hollywood.

Email me if you'd like to see more photos! Vera@sixpointharness.com (Ignore the lack of disk in the photo - they do come with the desk!)

Thanks!

I love your pics!
I'm still using CRTs. I'm frugal so I'll probably only upgrade when my monitors die. I was tempted to purchase a 19" or 20" Samsung lcd yesterday but changed my mind.
I been building my own PCs for years.
I spray painted the computer case for my secondary PC yellow just to give it a little pop. I also spray painted the keyboard.
Now, I just need to finally get off my butt and start drawing and animating something. Anything!

I don't have a dual monitor setup. I browsed through ASK at either Barnes and Noble or Borders. I think ASK is too hard for me but maybe someday. My secondard workstation is an AMD 900 and my primary is a Pentium 4 2.8. I don't plan on upgrading for a while. At least I hope not. A water cooled system hugh? Please post pics when you are done.

I'm a bit of a neat freak, so I like to keep my work area nice and tidy.

Here's my desk:

It may look like an old kitchen table, but that's just the design.

My view across the room:

My wife still cracks up when she comes in and sees that.

Here's a close up of my main workstation:

http://www.elusivemoose.com/images/CloseUp.jpg

And this one has some key areas marked that you may have overlooked:

http://www.elusivemoose.com/images/CloseUp-circles.jpg

From left to right:

1) My iPod backup with all my music and videos.
2) A potential fire hazard (what you can't see is there is another maxed out power strip plugged into that first one).
3) One of the many bikes I hope to own. I use it as motivation to get my butt back in gear.
4) The ever present chemical motivator.

OK, back to work....

That's the 24" widescreen that Dell sells. It's big, but it's funny how fast you get used to something like that.

I was tired of working off of a 15" CRT with a 15.4" laptop. Got a great deal on it last year. Probably gonna get another when I buy a new computer...

I was going to say I thought that was a 24".
Do you find with a big lcd that you don't maximize your windows all the way or do you just leave tme in a smaller window?
Basically, it seems like your arm would have to do more work with a maximized window.
Very nice monitor.
I saw on another website that the lcd panels in the previous Apple lcds and Dells are made from Samsung.
Someone opened up a monitor on a techie website and showed the similarities.

Well, I don't know if it's obvious in the pic, but this monitor is actually my second monitor run off of the laptop on the right. So, I tend to maximize windows on the big monitor if I'm working in Flash or Photoshop, and then I put my timeline and actionscript windows (for Flash) or extra tools and reference images (for Photoshop) on the laptop monitor.

It's not bad as far as movement. I have a wide Wacom that's mapped to just the big monitor. Then I use the mouse when I'm accessing the laptop monitor.

Sometimes (and I can't believe I'm even saying this) I catch myself wishing for the 30" 'cause I could use some extra room... :o

Yeah, I read the same thing. It's a good panel.

I'm running it off a VGA connection now and it's fantastic. I can't wait till I can get it hooked into a DVI...

Might I suggest a 64-bit system? It can process many times more data than 2 32-bit core processors (I'm sure). But I can see why you'd want so much processing power: 3D apps that eat up your resources, especially when trying to render hair.

If only you could get a 64-bit system, and apps that can use that kind of processing power. Hardest part would be getting 64-bit apps.

'Course, you could always go for a Macintosh, too

jtg91
02-13-2007, 02:01 PM
the main reason i havent gone for a 64 bit is that there is hardly any programs that use this at the moment. i dont really do 3d i use it for games mostly and now im just overclocking to enter it into leader boards on www.extremeoverclocking.com and im in top 10 in most of them and im second in one :D

ElusiveMoose
02-13-2007, 02:26 PM
Might I suggest a 64-bit system? It can process many times more data than 2 32-bit core processors (I'm sure).

Not really true. If I remember correctly (shaking the cobwebs out of his head) 64 bit just refers to the amount of information a processor can handle in a single instruction or the amount of temporary memory available within an instruction. This will result in faster processing bc some instructions no longer need to be broken up (or broken up as much) resulting in fewer instructions, thus faster processing.

BUT...

A parallel 32 bit system, depending on it's use (SIMD or MIMD) and whether the applications in use are written in such a way to take advantage of such a system, could (and probably will) be faster than the single proc 64.

Think of it in terms of a 30 year old genius (64 bit) vs. two 15 year old normals (32 bit dual core).

If you ask both groups to solve a math problem (that both groups are capable of solving), the 30 year old will be faster bc there's more processing power. (And the 15 year olds don't know how to take advantage of there being two of them--bad programming.)

But, if you ask both groups to play 52-pickup (SIMD), the 15 year olds will probably win bc...well, there's two of them and (while you could employ some basic strategy to make it go faster) it's just not that hard of a problem....

And, if the 15 year olds are taught some basic strategy (good programming) on how to take that original math problem and break it up into two problems so they could work separately and then converge their answers in the end (MIMD), then they'd probably beat the 30 year old there too.

That hurt a little...I think I pulled something...

...I gotta get back to work...

'Course, you could always go for a Macintosh, too

Hahahahahahahahaha........ Oh, you were serious...... JK :p

The "Tempest" had motherboard problems and I ended up selling it. After finding out that I couldn't convert the "Crystal Castles" to many games, I sold it too. I then bought a "Virtua Fighter 2" from an arcade. After I bought the VF2 I found out that there were geeks installing pcs in real cabinets for mame. The VF2 monitor blanked out and I decided to sell the VF2 motherboard and monitor. I kept the cabinet and a guy friend installed a tv in it for PS/2 gaming. I'm an old school girl gamer from the - GASP - 80's but my first home console was the Dreamcast.

I know either of these work spaces don't actually qualify as an "animator's desk," but this is where I do my evil planning to make somewhat of an official "animator's desk." The first is full of information regarding foundations, things-to-do, with random sketches or stickers or pictures. For instance, on the tack board I have a flow chart, starting on the left with "write story" and ending on the right with "finished music video," which is a project of mine that requires hours upon of hours of research. Because I am unable to afford equipment and software, I am finding a way to get a grant. This is turning out to be a project in itself.

But! I read Wishcraft and took the advice to create a planning wall, complete with a personal saint, whom I have chosen to be Michel Gondry, my favorite filmmaker. I intend to add Richard Williams soon, though. Can't go without him.

And, yes, this first work space was made from a huge piece of some drawing surface my partner used in drawing class, and two boxes to keep it off the ground. A makeshift desk, it is. I am ashamed.

The second is my partner's glorious iMac, which I use to test storyboards with. I dabble in Garageband as well, but it's not very useful when I have these broad visions (or hearings, may you) that can't be created with one piece of software. Plegh.

But, yeah. That'd be it, I believe.

Saw this thread resurface recently & I just finally got a new usb cable so I can grab pics from my camera....

So here's my "tradigital" workstation, first the digital end of things:

Swivel chair to the right & we have the traditional section of the studio:

http://www.pirateproductionmedia.com/Images/table.jpg

And all together:

http://www.pirateproductionmedia.com/Images/desk.jpg

As you can see, with the mini fridge & whatnot, I don't have to leave my chair much ;) :D. It's just a little corner in my room, but I love this setup. Just re-arranged the desk a bit too, both monitors used to be on the lower part of the table, & the scanner was on the raised part to the left. I think the current setup opens things up a bit, the 2nd monitor is a bit far away, but I really only use it for my X-sheets & timelines. Anyway, it works for me :)

Oh and do notice the multi-colored blocks painted on the walls of the room.... They are 11" x 19", and there are a LOT of them. I know because I drew all the pencil lines with a level & taped them off one color at a time, one day at a time....:Xead: The moral of this story is, if you want a neat looking paint job & you look through one of those books of ideas from home depot, really really think about whether or not it's worth it lol, I know my room won't be painted again until someone else moves in. :banghead
I do like it though

I’m almost ashamed to post this seeing everyone else’s.

This is mine. As you can see, it’s a total mess, but it’s all the space I’ve got. It does get de-cluttered occasionally but never lasts very long. It doubles as my desk and emergency station hence the sewing reel and nail brush.

the attachs: two are from the actual -in construction- studio.
you can see the "mate" - a local drink, kind of tea that you drink with a straw.

the wacom and this picture was taken in early january, and it was like.. i dunno.. 40 cº degrees. reaaaaally hot. and no AC. so..

the other is the way i work with 2 monitors.

hope you like ittttttt

edit: the middle attachment ,the zoomed samsung monitor, was in my 1st studio when i was working with my 1st animated shortfilm "the crane and the giraffe". i have more pics i will post soon.

Don't know why I didn't think of it before, feels a lot more spacious now that the desk hutch isn't creating a great bloody wall in the middle of the room! Ahh the joys of having too much in one place.

I see your using Pandora for music. good **** i use to that too. you got any stations?
Hahaha Tradigital, took me a moment but I got it. :p
Wish I had a mini-fridge, but then again I might not leave my desk for hours, since sometimes getting a snack is the only reason I leave when I start to draw, well that and the bathroom. :D

These pictures are pretty old, but nothings changed really. It's cleaned up a bit and I got new speakers but thats it. :p

Oh, and I think you can barely see my tablet underneath the black notebook. :D

If I gave a pic of my workstation it would just show my dell laptop... I have a modem cable and recharger plugged in... no tablet, but I wish I had one... I just use the touch screen to animate... its not that hard.... I have a normal computer to my left but the internet wont work with it... its an acer...

My Laptop:

120 GB of storage
Windows Vista
Intel Pentium Dual Core
Its got Flash 8
Gimp
sound editing stuff
oh, and I use Firefox 3
