Taken from Nausicaa.net
According to the production diary (http://www.ghibli.jp/15diary/) of September 26, the storyboards from Miyazaki's next film are watercolors. They're printed with a color copier and distributed to the main staff as special editions. The diary says, "Even we have not seen a colored storyboard very much. Of course it is the first time in Ghibli films".
The September 27 diary mentions that the expression method of the film is ambitious. Since the staff have to confirm the processing method of every cut, production is hard. Therefore, it is very difficult to manage the production period.
According to the production diary of September 29, animation production begins in next week.
If this film will be released in summer 2008, production term is about 20 months.
This is longer than Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle.
Suzuki mentioned in his interview, "It hasn't changed that we release a film every 2 years".
The titles of Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle were announced before animation production began, but the title of the next film will probably not be announced until December.
Thanks to T. Ishikawa for the news.
I'm very excited. :Blahblahb
CHEA!
Isn't his son working on a movie too?

Apparantly Miyazaki found inspiration for this new film from discovering an absurdly placed cafe on a remote mountain side overlooking a valley in a city and being run by an odd elderly couple.
It sounds wonderful from just that!
ALSO has anyone heard anything about the rumours that Disney have begun production of a LIVE ACTION version of Kikis' Delivery Service?
If it is true then it'll probably be massively altered script-wise to 'accomodate' for western audiences destroying the wonder and charm of the original animated piece.
WOE!

That's just stupid.
It doesn't matter if it's a eastern or a western cartoon. Hollywood ****s things up anyway.

Yes! Read that bit too and it already sounds like a fun movie. :D

Earthsea. I think lots of people are discounting it too early, esp animators. I'm not getting my hopes up about it but I'm not going to ignore it either.

I hope so. Howl's was supposed to be his last so you might be right. Then again, he might be going for a final hurrah w/ this latest.

"Howl's was supposed to be his last"
True, but he has a history of saying "this'll be the last one", like the same way Black Sabbeth have a farewell tour every year

ooooooh. Don't ever let Miyazaki hear you say that! He hates that comparison.
The only thing Miyazakis' films and Disneys' animated films have in common is the fact that they are animated!

True, but that's the one thing that sets both of them apart from the other animation companies.
I can't wait for this one... SO WHY DID YOU HAVE TO TELL US TWO YEARS EARLY! (oh god what if I die before then!?)

I don't think it is the animation that makes Miyazaki stand out. It's his stories.

I never (technically) said it was.
The animation makes him stand out from everyone but Disney.
His stories are what makes him stand out from Disney.

I disagree... How can you compare Disney and Miyazaki anyway? They're far too different.
Personally, I like Miyazaki's animé better than Disney's exaggerated toons, because of it's more realistic approach.
And (again, in my opinion) the stories tend to be better, because they don't necessarily follow this hollywoodish formula.

eh.. isnt his method of animating the same as anime animators? (jesus thats a mouth full) I mean in the traditional paper, pencil style with EXTREME detail? I actually think he does a mix of pencil and scanning then editing on a comp.
EDIT: on a very off topic note that has NOTHING to do with animation... You guys should see this movie called "Tsotsi". (google it if you want to know more) This talk about bad holywood movies and etc made me think of this. [its a foreign film just to let you know]

I just finidshed up my collection. My wife got me Kiki's Delivery Service and Nausicaa for my b-day. I fell asleep watching Nausicaa but Kiki was great. Both of the animations show their age, but the stories are very unorthodox. I'm glad to add them to my collection.

i'm not sure if it's the same in other parts of the world, but all the Ghibli collection dvds here in the UK seem to be numbered in a completely random order.
Nausicaa, being no.1, would lead you to believe they might be ordered by when they were originally released. BUT NO! THEY'RE NOT!
IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE!!!
can someone please explain why. Before I accept that there doesn't have to be a logical reason for absolutely everything and by trying to seek out this logic and reason we are slowly destroying all excitement and mystery left in this world?
please?

nausicaa reminds me of Dune, I dug it.
Mebbe the order is the order that Disney bought or printed them? Who knows with them. still makes no sense.
Anyone see "the cat returns?" I've been eyeing it but I'm wary cause no one ever seems to mention it.

I saw the Cat Returns just yesterday actually!
It's really good animation wise but apart from that I felt it was lacking a good well structured story and at times it was just really..."anime."
I know everything else Ghibli do is technically anime, but Miyazakis' and Takahatas' films you get this superb quality of storytelling that seems to rise above general anime-ness. You know, without having to resort to stupid faces all the time.
This probably makes no sense to anyone but me...
...but overall I say the Cat Returns is worth a watch.

Actually it would be great if there was a movie that just screamed "ANIME!" at you repeatedly for 2 hours. It would be like an Avant Garde post modernist parody on the anime genre.
