I'm developing this character for an animation. I didn't post in the WIP thread as I nead some advice on technique. As you see the character chew, there seems to be a quick flash of white at the sides of each cheek like the color is missing. I guarantee that they are colored in.
What causes that? I read about something similar in ASK but I don't remember what it was. Any hints?

I.... see no white?

I see it. It's like a "jerky" overlapping that tricks the eye into see to many images at once, hence causing the "blank" spot effect. Driving me nuts! Stare at his right cheek. You'll see it. ARRRHHH!

I honestly don't see it, or at least it doesn't bother me like it does you. Then again, this is your baby and you want it to be perfect. Have you tried changing the background color just to see if it has to do with the speed of the chewing and the fact that the white is so prominent?
Totally inexperienced suggestion, but I thought I'd try. I think it looks great!

I don't see it either Vic, it looks great to me.

Maybe I'll stop worrying about it and move on to the next step. I just remember ASK saying something about the lack of smoothness caused by not overlapping keyframes close enough. I'll keep searching. Thanks for the help and the compliments.:D
P.S. The animation will be titled, The Diet. A man decides he want's to change his eating habits, but will his food let him? I'll keep you all updated.
I don't see it either.
Another cartoon, Vic?!!:D

I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but I see a screen refresh. The refresh rate of apple's monitors is crap so I see a moment where the frame redraws itself making a jaggy white bit near the end of the loop.
If that's what you mean then double up frame 10 (make it 9+10 or 10+11) and see if that works. If that doesn't then yes, you should redraw the troublesome frame to a new timing/shape. {I think it's Drawing 5, which is at position 10.}
If that's not what you mean, then... stop takin' dope!:D
Can't wait to see the new one!

I'll add the rest of the graphics and see what it looks like and go from there.

I can kinda see what your talking about (though during a cartoon, I probably wouldn't notice). There might be too big of a difference between frame 6 and 7. Try making the chin on frame 6 in the frame 7 position (while leaving the cheek where it is) and make the cheek on frame 7 sort of a blobular stretch from the position of 6 to 7. Of course that might mess up your timing...Great looking character as always!:)

I want one side to be quick, as a snapping bite and the other side to ease into the chew. I like the result I have with it except for the flashiness.
Pixel, I tried moving the frames around but it didn't look like a natural chewing effect. I'm pretty sure now that it's the white background causing it as I tried it with a colored one and didn't seem so bad. (see original post)
Thanks for all your advice. I'll keep playing with it......I mean my animation!

Well the chewing looks much cleaner now that I added the background. Here's what it looks like so far. (non animated)
I'll be adding food to the plate. He's watching tv as he eats, hence the remote.:D

Awesome, Vic! Looks like I feel after Thanksgiving dinner!
When do you forecast a finished cartoon?

Thanks man. Well, with my work schedule, probably around NEXT thanksgiving, lol. The only reason I got this much done is because I had the day off after a tooth extraction. That reminded me of another cartoon idea.
I really hope to get this one done in a few months. Not that it'll really need to take that long, but I want this to be my best to date so I want it to be carefully done and is my first 24 fps animation. I usually work with 12. Wish me luck.:o

Well if you want to be like Vic you must be born like Vic. Straight from Will Eisners forehead with pencil in hand and toga draped sexily across the body.
