Okay, I guess these go here...First up and oldie but a goodie. This is a character for a 2D animation pitch project for a friend. It's 12 inches tall. I can post this one because I will be doing newer version of it with a new costume later in the year.

This was a toy prototype (never released, unfortunately) based off a CG cartoon series Called Butt Ugly Martians that aired on TV a while back. Cedric played a tech genius in the show.

Golden... both of them! Do you use them as referance?

They look great!
Have to tried animating the first one? It seems a bit top heavy, hard to keep him from falling over?

Clay - Yes the animator used the big guy for reference for his animation. He actually changed a few things on the original character design after seeing the maquette. For example I made the legs thicker than he originallly had them, and he went with it. Once you can trully see "all the way around" your character it helps you move the forms around properly in animation. Even when I sculpt characters based on CG modelling you find things that don't quite work in the real world.

David - The big one has been animated and it looks great. The maquette helped solve some of the 2D form issues the animator was having. As for the sculpt being top heavy, the twin engines on the back do interfere with the balance but I have metal pegs running through his ankles into the base for support. It helps in the illusion that a character shaped like this can actually stand.

I started my art career as a 2D cell inker at Curious Pictures back when things were done on paper, LOL. So I actually come from a animation background.

Thanks for looking and commenting guys. More to come.

Ah, so it's a reference scuplture for drawn animation, I misunderstood and thought it were a puppet that should be animated. Then the weight would be no issue.

David - sorry if I mislead you. Maquettes are just static 3D (as in real world) hand sculpted representations of 2D and CG art. It probably would be interesting to see the big guy animated as a stop motin puppet for sure.

Noob -Thanks. No stop motion for me man. I have my hands full just doing sculpts. The animator whose design the big guy belongs to was a Disney animator for a bunch of years a bit back. He worked on a lot of the feature films like Mulan and I can't quite recall the others he mentioned.
I'll see if he'll swing by maybe if he ain't too busy.

Me and the family are good - thanks for asking. Just knocked me back some.
Here are some fridge magnets I'm selling on another board. Thought I'd show them here before they're all gone. A lot of model kit painters have been buying them to paint up for practice and whatnot...okay enough of that - back to maquettes, LOL. Stay tuned.

Dunbar10 - thanks.

MistChiff - yeah they are ugly that's why I keep em locked in drawer at nite... :o

Clay - silicone rubber ( Mold max 30, GI 1000) and a two part urethane resin (Smooth cast 305) for castings...Don't be sorry, you won't learn unless you ask questions... :)

 they're twistedly greatastic

LOL! Ya killin me Noob...Thanks. I'ma steal that "greatastic"...
Which reminds me - you owe me some sculpts...hmmmm...

Terro - Never thought of the mask business...I would probably suck at that scale. I'm more of the smaller scale type sculptor if there is such a thing.

I know I know... more animation based sculpts right? Okay... I'll behave...

Terro
