Well it all depends on what type of character you are working on. Realistic depictions can be hard to achieve. I tend to go big when it comes to shoes and feet. I don't have any way to show you right now (stuck at work :( ) but check out some comic book superheros. You'll notice their shoes are bigger.

"When a young artist asked me for advice on drawing the human foot, I told him, 'The first thing you must learn is how to take your shoe off, and then how to take your sock off, then prop your leg up carefully on your other knee, take a piece of paper, and draw your foot.'" -- Chuck Jones

Sorry, I don't know any tricks for drawing shoes.

I would say to google some animation stills or comic book pics and try to copy them. Take a look and see what they have in common. What features define "shoe" and then go from there.

Another thing I do when I'm having trouble getting the essence of an object onto paper is get a photograph of the object and then trace the main lines in another layer (either in Flash or Photoshop). Then when you hide the photo layer, you're left with the most important part of that object. Go from there either adding detail or boiling it down more by taking lines away.

It won't give you the picture you're looking for (most likely), but it will give you a better idea of what you are trying to draw.

Which reminds me of another of my favorite Chuck Jones quotes:

"The whole essence of good drawing—and of good thinking, perhaps—is to work a subject down to the simplest form possible and still have it believable for what it is meant to be."

Good luck!

Hey, Josh... I don't know if it'll help or not, but I just remembered that I have a pic up on my website of a kid with one shoe sideways and one pointed directly at the camera.

Not that I'm saying it's the best pic in the world, but it could serve as a reference to one person's interpretation of a shoe.

Just go to my website (link below) and look under "Character Design". It's the blue and orange kid.

Again, good luck!

Sure... The 3D stuff on my site was all created using Animation:Master

Website is http://www.hash.com

It's a cool program (powerful, cheap), but does have some limitations--I'm currently in a match to the death with some feathers on my current project (Chicken Karaoke (http://chickenkaraoke.blogspot.com))

I'd love to see some of your shoe drawings, when you get some you like...

The same in some ways, different in others. Spline based modeller. Good hair and cloth sims. Geared towards character animation. Biggest difference is price: $299

It's the same software that Jeff Lew (Killer Bean 2, The Matrix Reloaded, Spiderman) and Victor Navone (Alien Song, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, Incredibles) started (and got their big breaks) with.

If you've got other questions about it, feel free to PM me.

Yo jtg91, I drew you some pictures showing you how I draw shoes and some positions in which i draw them.

Hope this helps :) I included "shoes" just incase you were talking about like dress shoes. I usually just draw those big ol' fat sneakers but whatever you want is your decision :P
