The reason the arms aren't working too good is because they aren't mirror copies of each other; plus the arm that should be the biggest because it is closest to us is actually smaller than the one far away. Good work with the feet though.

here is a background im working on for my newest animation
i first sketched it on my wacom, then just used line tool, pretty simple
still need to add many props, plant, rabbit cage, stands etc
http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/4484/classmt9.jpg
Hey Flash C!
Nice background and colours, but you need to work in the perspective ;) . The walls, window and floor are in isometric perspective (parallel lines only) and desk is in perspective of one point.
That is an example of a room drawed in a perspective of 1 point:
http://www.speedee.com.mx/2Dtutorials/perspective_1pt.jpg
In the techniques section are some links to perspective tutorials. I hope this help you :)

Ima Gooner
07-09-2007, 04:49 PM
yep, ferx's right. One point perspective is real easy to do, and it'll definitely make the background better.
flashcartoons
07-09-2007, 05:09 PM
that perspective stuff is really hard to understand....
Ima Gooner
07-09-2007, 05:53 PM
alright ill try to explain... For one point you first have to draw a point on your paper wherever you want your lines to vanish (known as the vanishing point). This point will be where all the lines you construct extend to, except your vertical and horizontal lines....
Let’s take a simple rectangular prism as an example... You first draw a normal square. Next you take a line from a corner, and draw it all the way to the vanishing point. You do this for all 4 corners. Then add the horizontal and vertical lines to close the ends, and erase your construction lines....
The same logic is applied to your classroom. Look at ferx's example.. all the lines other than vertical and horizontal go to the vanishing point.
______________________________________________
Sorry about the lack of visual representation ^^ Hopefully you gets it... If not, I phail

Regarding your tiptoe movie, I like the way you animated his legs. You finally got rid of that tween style. But his upper portion of his body does look flat and tweened. I guess I could say that your literally half way there.
Great job on the bottom half , not so great on the upper half. lol

a bg im working on
http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/9089/yrdtrvo8.jpg
Hey Flash,
I agree with Terro on your tiptoe scene, the legs look good, but it looks to me like they should push the body up a bit more when the legs are passing each other. Think about how you move when you tiptoe around, and exaggerate that motion. Maybe if the body comes up and almost hangs for a split second, then comes back down as he plants his next foot. You could make it an ease in or a fast in, instead of having the tweens evenly spaced. That would help it to look less "tweened", but overall good stuff. :)
I like the BG too, your perspective is improving, the only things I'd note would be that the trash can & basket could look a little more 3 dimensional, and the top lines of the darker areas at the bottom of the walls seem to get larger as they go back, they should be getting smaller going towards the vanishing point. But again, you're definitely improving, so keep it up!
flashcartoons
07-23-2007, 02:32 PM
thanks for the tip toe advice, i did actually fix that in the animation
as for the background, this is the end of the alley
im experiementing with cartoony drawings and flat, no line backgrounds
i dont like the mesh all that much

07-23-2007, 06:24 PM
Looks like you have the vaninshing point thing down pretty good! The only thing catching my eye wrong is the trim at the bottom of the left side gets bigger as it goes back. Of course, if you put something on the ground there it won't be as noticeable anyway. Oh, and the Animator's Survival Kit has some real good pointers on a tip-toe walk. Keep up the good work!

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/5536/preview2il5uv0.jpg
Nice work Flash! . I agree with Terro and Noob.
Maybe for the walk cycle, for up and down use the old and nice trick of squash and stretch. (When the "convict" put down his foot >>squash<<< and when up feet >>recover his initial form<< ... you need good timing for this but is a great excersise and your character can gain personality when walk - remeber " bounce the ball " for squash and stretch technic :D )
ahh I like your milf ( with her 60´s stylish :D)
flashcartoons
07-28-2007, 08:32 PM
i bet the reason he's a convict is because he liked to visit kindagarten a little too often before he went to jail :rotfl

practicing gravity
http://www.flashcartoons.org/preview/ballbounceplay.swf
flash - I'm not sure what you intended the object to be, but unless it's a rock, you can do better. Not to come off harsh, but I know you're capable of it. When it lands, flatten out the bottom & make it get wider. Always keep in mind you can change the shape, but keep the volume the same. So have it get wide & flat, then spring up getting tall & thin. Exaggerate movements more than you think you have to, then exaggerate them some more :)
It's good stuff, just keep pushing it further
flashcartoons
07-30-2007, 06:00 AM
im not sure what i intended it on being, i guess i was thinking it was a potato falling down a stair, when i drew it i did it too fast :(
ill keep practicing
heh, well if you're not sure, then who is? :P
Hope I didn't offend with my last comment, I just want you to put some thought into the real physics of the action. it also bounces to the left when it came from the left in the first place. Depending on the shape & hardness of the object, that ranges from unlikely to almost impossible. Just try shifting that thing's weight around. You've got the ability, but you need to step out of your existing comfort zone. You've got your style - now make it really come to life.
flashcartoons
07-30-2007, 11:01 AM
im not offended at all man, no worries
this isnt anything im adding to a cartoon or anything just something random without using onion skin, thats how the ball fell lower, when i really just wanted to bounce it and never fixed the problem lol

I agree with ferx...very well done! I'd love to see it bang into one planet...:Dand there goes another practice for you - explosion :)
Monsieur Rat
10-12-2007, 05:59 AM
Man I just can't get over your improvment Lavalle. The rocket is really quite good. I think the next task for you is to try and make your characters look less stiff. Make everything seem more fluid and organic, you know?
Anyway, great stuff. I'm pretty sure I've seen Diaper Boy before, but it's still just hilarious.
flashcartoons
10-12-2007, 07:42 AM

i know my stiffness is a huge problem, most of my cartoons have that problem but thats because i was self teaching myself animation now taht i have other resources that can teach me the real way
which is all the fundimentals, anticipation, squash and stretch, perspective, weight etc etc
next im working on weight

10-23-2007, 08:02 PM
You think you could post the three steps? We could probably help find ways you could get better at the three step process if we saw your process in-depth.
Also it would probably be a good idea to superimpose your work over the original (all three steps), so that you can get a more concrete look at where things don't match up, and make note the visual errors. (It's a solid, appealing attempt, but finding where its faults are is the sure-fire best way to improve what you do)

352 Pages of Lessons :)
I come to realize i know nothing about animating, or animation. I have come up with my own style and its not the right style. So im going to learn from ground up. Im signing up for some 'life drawing' classes too. Im hoping to do do every lesson in this book. Thus far i have done some ball bouncing, but i think im still not grasping timing and spacing.

http://www.comlock.net/crit/ball01.jpg
take a look at "really slow" it's acctually the fastest part you'll find the movement.
It helps to overdo\caricaturise the movements. It's acctually more simple.More like this:
http://www.comlock.net/crit/balll01.jpg
It's the absolute slowest at the top of the arch. The absolute fastest at the bottom. When the jumps gets smaller and therefore "faster" you only draw less balls in the animation. the "slow on top" "fast at the bottom" spacing must always be the same. It's the same in the book but the differences on spacing is more subtle.
helps to draw the ball in this order to get the spacing more right:
(you just add more balls "inbetween" on the bigger jumps to get the motiotion slower)
http://www.comlock.net/crit/balll02.jpg

Am i correct in saying, each keyframe is number on a chart in a 24fps animation?
flashcartoons
05-17-2008, 01:56 PM
when i say keyframe i was refering to flash's keyframe
so each of the numbers are not 1/24 of a second?
I come to realize i know nothing about animating, or animation. I have come up with my own style and its not the right style. So im going to learn from ground up. Im signing up for some 'life drawing' classes too.
Flash, that's really a good thing to hear man. I'm not knocking anything you've done in the past, because God knows you work super fast & have a great sense of humor! I admire the amount of work you crank out for sure, but there are times I can tell you've ignored many fundamentals, so it's great to hear you're going to dedicate some time to learning those, particularly the life drawing classes. They might seem tough at first but your stuff will improve dramatically & it will more than pay off in the end.
Anyway, just wanted to say that & if you have questions fire away. Hope you post some of your life drawing sketches as well! Good luck man!

On this exercise try focusing more on the consecutive breaking of joins. The force comes from the shoulder, so animate the Shoulder to Elbow section of the arm first. The animate in the Elbow to wrist, while thinking of the force the upper arm has on the lower arm. Then the wrist using the same approach. You'll see the difference from what you got now. It'll be fluid and correct.
ATM your had flops a little because you have the wrist displaying the most force.
Overall I think this is a great exercise.
Two thumbs up.

So far the best thread I've read in the whole forum. The most comprehensible, consistent. If there was a price for the best thread, it should be for you Flash dude.
I feel the same.
