I was browsing over at CGtalk and ran into a add for a new painting application. ArtRage 2 , this thing only costs $19.95 and looks like a pretty powerful application.
Check it out at http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html (http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html)

I downloaded the free version and I have to say I prefer the pencil brushes over photoshop and Alias Sketchbook Pro.
Unfortunately I haven't been too impressed with the painting side of it. I'll have to buy the full version so I can use layers though and that might make a world of difference.
Here's a quick example of the pencil:

So I bought ArtRage 2.5 today and I was right Layers can make a REAL difference. I'll post an example later i was just playing with it for now.
Also something that wasn't in 2.0 but is in 2.5 is that you can mix the paint on a single layer. And it has a water cup for you to "clean" your brush with. Could be used to great effect by someone that knows what they're doing. I do not unfortunately :)
Edit:Another great new edition is the use of a reference photo. It gets tacked on the margin as if put onto a large canvas. Much better than photoshop when you have to keep tabbing between the reference and the drawing. I'm really liking this program. I wish it had watercolors though,

I have been playing with ArtRage, the free version and was satisfied by the colurs. I am proficient in Photoshop, did not learn to use it for paintings (so i can't compare them. With ArtRage it was very instinctive. ArtRage convinced me, because of the brightness of the colours. But i could have got real shiny colours in Freehand, Fireworks, Photoshop or even Windows Paint, if i were stubborn enough. What seems to be easy in ArtRage is the single picture drawing. It also exports well and i have the impression that i could produce a lot of pictures in a shorter amount of time.
