Color dodge is great for lighting but make sure you use it on the layer that has the thing you want to lighten up. It doesn't work well on empty layers.

For shadows you can use multiple tools:

You can used the Burn tool, and play around with the settings.

You can use the Layer Blending Options, which allows for a Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Bevel-ish shadow, etc.

You can use your paint-brush and paint shadows...etc.

I hope this helps.

Try using a big brush with a feathered edge and turn down the flow and opacity values. I think that might work...

Yeah there a lot of tutorials out there, but from my experience the best way to do it is to sit down and start by doing 10 minute sessions. Just open up a new file and start doodle painting till you see something in them. Go into it with no idea at all and don't concentrate , try to free your mind. At first what you paint will look terrible and you wont like it, but after a few of these you'll start to adjust and start seeing some improvement and ideas will start showing up.

That was a great tutorial. I only got to watch about 10 minutes but loved seeing that forest background come to life.

Anyone ever used the Gnomon Workshop (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/groups/photoshop_g.html) dvds? Recommend any particular artist in them?
