Hey all,

I'm looking for a little help-

I was wondering if anyone has ever made an animation before using the technique of "Stencil Puppets".

You can see what I mean by "Stencil Puppets" here:

Any help would be great!

Thanks!

Firstly, those are some great animations. Are they yours?

If not than it looks to be normal animation just with stencils. lotsa pictures taken and then put in a row. Digitally I'd recommend After Effects for a similiar effect. Use the layers and such.

Hey, Thanks!

"The Departed Astronaut" is mine, the other one isn't.

Yeah, it's just a normal animation with stencils, I was just wondering if anyone has used "Stencil Puppets" before.

That's some cool stuff you did :)
I don't know of anyone who's made such an approach with stencilling, but there's quite probably someone out there in the big wide world.

As for help, I don't know what to offer you, except encouragement that you just keep experimenting and developing the way you work and what you like to make. Understanding of the medium will come the more you experiment, along with practicing and understanding the basic principles of animation and good storytelling. I bet you could come up with some really great stuff.

It reminds me of shadow puppetry. Maybe you should research some of that and see what ideas it holds for you. One animator I can name off the top of my head is Lotte Reiniger (http://www.awn.com/mag/issue1.3/articles/moritz1.3.html). I guess google and wikipedia will help you find other stuff.

Keep at it, eh? :)

That was excellent! I don't know what else to say... Never seen anyone do an animation with 'stencil puppets' before. :D I hope you'll do more!

By the way, checked your Mario video too and that one was pretty amazing also.

Welcome to the forums!

Awh, Thanks so much for all the kind words bleupencil!

And thanks also for the link to Lotte Reiniger. She has some amazing looking work that I've never heard of before!

Thanks to you too elephant,

and yeah I'd like to do more, But I'm worried about the length of the final animation. I'm not sure there is a suitably long wall in Toronto!
