View Full Version : Importing from corel painter
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, not sure if it should be here or in the Corel section, but it relates to both.
Basically I'd like to do my final inking in Corel Painter as it gives far better line quality & has more effects etc...
so...anyone know how to do that? I don't know alot about file extensions, so I'm not sure how to save things in the first place so that they import into toonboom.
If files cannot go directly from corel to TBS, could I import them from corel to adobe, THEN import into TBS??
I've been trolling around the toonboom forums & haven't found a clear answer there yet, so I thought Id try here. Any advice or tips much appreciated.

Well... Painter is rasterbased, and TBS is vector. Two completely different systems.
So you'd really have to export each frame as a JPEG and then import it into TBS. That's the only way to do it.
bummer :(
thanks for the reply though, I'm not well versed in technobabble, so I had no clue if I could make them work or not.
Dare I ask what raster is? I know a little about rasta, but raster? no clue

Haha, rasta. Well, raster is a bit different from rasta, LOL.
In this case, the raster is a raster of pixels. So it's simple a pixel image. Vector images are built up out of point and anchor points, forming curves and all that. So the difference is that you can infinitely zoom in on a vector image, without loss of quality, while this is impossible with raster images as at given point of zooming in you start seeing the individual pixels.
aahhhhh, thanks for clearing that up :)
in that case I guess corel isn't my best option for inking anyway, unless I drew everything extremely close & zoomed out? either way, if I can't get the lines I want out of toonboom, it sounds like adobe is the easier solution.
Thanks again, Rage

Hi Kdg or whatever...may I just say-before you de-bunk ToonBoom for ever-
I have wrestled with the line quality in this prog. for some serious time-wondering whether it was me or TB? In the end-mainly through sheer trial and persistence-I feel I found a reasonable compro. with tight red pencil col-erase on good paper scanned in quite large and then the wonders of the Optimise tool to each drwg. It can be quite a 'smart' clean look! Maybe not quite what you want-I don't know. I find it is certainly a good high level and style. Boy!-you have to work at finding things out sometimes, though! You'd think they're all trade secrets!!! Hope you like this example if it comes through. If I can offer more help-please say. Remember-ToonBoom still has great Camera possibilities!!

Sorry-I'll try another image. I can't seem to get my swfs up! This j-peg is not as sharp as the swf but might help if you can see it! The 'Squirrel' would never forgive me if I didn't try again! er...this looks like small man! I need to get the hang of this...

Hi leno or whatever:rolleyes: ,
I wasn't trying to do that at all. In fact I love toonboom & although I have very little knowledge of flash, I know most animators Ive talked to that work with both far prefer toonboom. It has alot to absorb, but its a very powerful program once you get it. I've been progressing with it & learn something new every time I use it. As far as Corel goes, I've been getting better lines from TBS than I first was, but regardless, Corel just has way more brushes etc, which is why I wanted to use it. Its not as much of a concern now since I just downloaded 100+ more brushes for adobe anyway.

Dear Kdog---just a mini up-date. I really must have a look at Corel myself soon-I've been thinking about it for a while. Just at the moment though, I want to still work on a 'style' of linework that compliments with a remaining BG elements-'camera-cool'-option in Toonboom. When I get my web-site loaded with my examples and sort out the links, maybe folk can see what I am trying to get at, as I am not sure my swf.s are comin' through here at present. I must say however, Kdog, I really like your Greek Quotes you use! Long live Greece and Wise men everywhere! (Especially with the new 300 Spartans film out soon here-hence my name-sake hero!) May I share one I heard today with you all? It comes from that famous western 'philosopher'/author-Mark Twain.
'If you need to cheer yourself up, start by cheering everyone else up!'
I like that-and it is so true! We animators can become a little introverted at times.I guess that's where this Forum is so good!:)
