I have seen an effect in Flash 'toons where a character passes through a shadow, or enters a tunnel and they grow darker. How is this done?

I can think of a couple ways to do this, depending on the effect you want, etc.
1. If the character (or parts) are symbols (and they should be), you can just use the tint property. Give a tint of black or dark grey, but only a small percentage. I'm pretty sure this property is animatable, so you can change it over time, but it affects the entire symbol, not just a part of it.
2. If you want a shadow (maybe in a particular shape) to pass across the character. You can take a graphic symbol in the shape of the shadow, make it black or dark grey, and give it a medium to high alpha. Then use a copy of your character in another layer to make a mask for the shadow symbol you just created. Animate the shadow across the character. It'll only show up within the mask, and the alpha will still let you see through it. It'd probably be a good idea to soften the edges of the shadow, too, or make it a movie symbol and use a filter (if you're using Flash 8).
Hope this helps. Good luck
