hi folks :)
for start, i love 2d art, i think it is the best, and as i can see it from now, i'm going to continue with it a lot more years.
but recenlty, and i think that also other 2d artist thinks about it, that 3d is very tempting, to see all the thing that 3d has to offer, movies, games and it even become a replacment for 2d, sometimes i can't recognize what is 2d and what is 3d.
i tried to learn 3d some time ago, but i think i wasn't ready for it.. i wanna learn it, i think it is a big plus to know both 2d and 3d.

so, 2d artist, what is your opinion about it? is 3d also took a consider ever from you? did you plan to learn it someday? sould i focus on 2d first?

have a nice day :)

Well I think, 3d will never totally succeed about 2d animation.
That's because, everyone needs it: advertisment, TVshows, Movies, Scriptwriter, for storyboards (sketches), make character tests before creating them in 3d and so on.
I can't barely watch TV without seeing something which is not animated in 2d.
In every second children's advertisment spot there is a cartoon character drinking Cacao, or eating saucages or whatever. 2d animation is an essential part of modern industry and it will be in the future eiher.

For myself I favor 2d animation.
In my childhood I watched CartoonNetwork and Nickelodeon every day, and I loved it. Even today I don't like 3d animated series like Jimmy Neutron, and still prefer good animated cartoon series.
I think, it's a kind of liking. So I like 2d animation and want to do it in the future.
At the moment I don't want to learn 3d, I still have too much work by practising my drawing skills and graduating in school. In addition to that I am not interested in it. Maybe when I do something's like getting the perspective in a picture or making architecture for a movie, I will use 3d elements.
But until then: I think not. :)

Dunno but, isn't it a totally different kind of work between 2d and 3d animation, i.e. creating characters, buildings and so on.

I prefer 4d, the ultimate "d" of animation

I like a mix of both the most. mechanical objects: vehicles, buildings, ect. should be done in 3d. it gives them a much sharper, sythetic look. While i like to see the organic objects: characters, plants, ect. animated by hand so they get that human touch, that feeling of motion and imperfection that the car shouldn't have. alot of artists that work strictly 2d either tend tward the organic feel and then you get wobly cars, and strange motion effects, and some more precise mechanical artists, that endup giving characters a clay feel, where it is like seeing a stange plastic anime model rotating. being able to draw the 2 types of objects differently or combinding 2d and 3d is the key.

I always though 2d wouldnt die and tha it would keep being one of the truest forms of art there is, that is till I seen this documentary on the discovery channel.

They had a show on brain implants that are currently used on paralized people. They had a guy paint in photoshop with his brain, he couln't even do a nice circle but the technology is getting better and better. At this rate in 30 or 40 years you'll put on a small helmet, picture a image in your head an it will be drawn for you. Thus everyones imagination will really judge your work since talent will not be that important.

For now the impplants are surgical but supposably sony has already patented a technology that is not surgical and will alter your sences. For instance when watching a movie and something explodes, this device will trick your mind to think it's smelling fire. Now if the corporate world is getting their hands on these , the military probably had them a few years ago.

oh my god! i always thought about something like that, when you thinking of something and it will be draw, but damm not that soon!
yeah i guess you are right about the "2d will not die" thing, and that one of the reasons i'm too doing it, i think that like CIDIC said, 2d has a more human touch, it have more feelings. that is why paintings are selling by millions of dollars and not a 3d model :p
2d has a power that 3d will never have.
