View Full Version : toon shaders - your opinion?
toon shaders have become the effect of choice for incorporating 3D animation with 2D anim. What is your opinion/experience using toon shaders? What program/settings give you the best looking lines? Have/Will toon shaders become cliche as many would argue with lense flares and chrome effects? Are there better techniques for seamless incorporation of 2D and 3D?
NOOB!

ugh,i think toon shaders on characters look like ass. They work better on mechanical objects...or just objects.Anything living doesn't really look nice....although i did see a few japanese examples a while back that looked good on human characters, but there were a whole load of camera moves and quick cuts to make it seem traditional...you could still tell it wasn't though.

I like the ramp shader, it has it's downsides when it comes to the light source but can produce nice 2d like effects.
Student project, clips of Disney's Hercules re-animated in 3D and toon shaded.
even though the video was grainy it looked pretty good, especially for character animations.

If there is a toonshader available for use by hobbyists and amateurs I'd love to have it in my arsenal!
I figure that would be the closest to 3D animation I'd ever want to create even though 3D models are created before being given the cel-shading treatment!

The RTSC program is sort of what your looking for, but you still need to create or find 3d models.

Pretty much all 3d software has some sort of toon shader built in, even old versions will have a ramp shader. 3DSMax & Maya (of course) have them and although I don't use blender I'm sure it does too.
A program I found a while ago called Swift3d (http://www.swift3d.com/) is great for small animations and it can render 3D animations in vector form (flash optimized), this render engine gives a great toon effect
