Before I got the Acme disc and pegbars I currently use I built my own animation system. That included the peg registration. The pictures below are of the system I built just before switching over to the Acme system. It consists of an Artograph Light Tracer with a 10" by 12" tracing area purchased at Hobby Lobby for around $45. A Wilson Jones paper punch purchased at an office supply for about $30. An 11" by 14" by 1/4" thick sheet of translucent acrylic used as a pegboard.

Everything was tied together by a set of registration pegs made from 3/8" long by 1/4" diameter aluminum standoffs. These are used in electronics to hold circuit boards apart from each other in a stack (hence the name standoff). I buy these through an electronics supply and round off one end. Then they are mounted with screws on the lightbox.

This picture shows a close-up of the Light Tracer. I replaced the original tracing surface with a 1/8" thick piece of acrylic with pegs mounted at the top and bottom.

The pegboard was translucent so a light could be used underneath to film several layers of paper. This board was mounted under a movie camera to film the animation frame by frame. Today I use a tape-down bar on a scanner bed to scan my drawings into a computer eliminating the film camera.

Close-up of the metal pegs on the pegboard. They have a threaded hole down the center. I would buy these metal standoffs in packs of a dozen and make enough to use on several pegboards and my own pegbars.

Today one can buy premade pegbars online. Especially the three hole variety to use a standard paper punch. I used a two peg system because I tried the three hole and found the two hole to be a bit more accurate with registration.
