I've mentioned doing this before, & having seen Comlock's caricatures of other people from another forum, I think it would be great to see here as well.

So here is my offer: I'll trade a drawing of you for a drawing of me. Portrait, caricature, pencil, paint, traditional, digital, whatever. I can't promise mine will be as good as your's, but I can promise the effort & I know it will be good fun & great practice.

If people don't want to post pics publicly but are interested, we can exchange reference pics via PM or email.

Here's the best out of the bunch. I really had trouble with the eyes!

I started with the Evil head on shot and it reminded me of the Queen in Snow White. The 3/4 view worked a lot better for me though.

I think both your sketches rock. You totally captured the queen in Snow White, and I think you did a great job of getting Blackspot in her "evil" pic.

I've had drawings of you for almost a week, but they're real crap so I haven't posted. I think I can wonk one of them into something passable though, so I'm working on that.

In all honesty I'd have had something up by now, but I have to admit that mario kart for the wii has taken a decent portion of my time for the last few days. :o

Everyone - sorry I still haven't got anything done, but I haven't forgotten about anything. Right now my comp has been gradually dying & my peripherals work when they feel like it - scanner usually doesn't feel like it. :(
Also I've been concentrating a lot of time on *hopefully* making a significant investment & starting a business, so until that's done I can't guarantee how much drawing time I can squeeze in, but as soon as I'm able I've got everyone on my list & will start producing something asap. :)

That is absolutely a caricature, cloud! Excellent work! :D

A caricature basically is a more cartoony version of a portrait, so don't think cartoony = bad. You can push them to be very extreme or keep them relatively close to real life proportions but adding a cartoony touch as you did. By "cartoony touch" I'm referring to bold dark lines & limited shading, which is pretty much exactly what you did, & it came out great. :)

I think I need to take a similar approach & start from the more realistic proportions & work my way up to really wonky caricatures. When I try to go extreme right now I have an idea in my head but it always ends up looking like a 6 year old drew it. :banghead

Anyway, keep up the great work!

I import a picture into flash and stretch, shrink, skew, widen, and every damned thing you can think of to try my hand at caracaturing. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Is a nice portrait, well achived proportions on it. Try a more "fluid" strokes with the pencil, a bit large strokes. If you need to pass the pencil 2 or 3 times over the same trace, do it, for a more defined shape and fluid lines. :)

Wow! So much amazing stuff here! This is really becoming a kick ass thread, great job guys & gals! :D

I apologize again for taking so long to produce anything, but I've finally brought something to the table. Not the best thing I've drawn, but it's the only thing I've done in a while. Also I limited my time on this as I badly need to increase my speed. Most of my good portraits take 4+ hours, :banghead, so I capped this one at 1.5. Anyway here's Jester, done with pencil/paper, in just under 1.5 hours.

Not sure why it came out as grainy as it did, doesn't look that way in RL. Might just be from a high rez scan being squished down to size, or possibly from the paper? Not really sure, did that on regular copy paper, but I usually use nice 80 lb paper for portraits. Whatever, glad you like it Jester. :)

Great work Ferx! I like that one a lot, first thing I've seen you do in this style & it works really well! The can of paint is a nice touch too. :D

Cloud, I think you did a fantastic job on Tom. Unless you portray them as super badasses that get tons of girls, then adolescent males will always think you made them look too innocent. :p It's just the nature of the beast. :D (just messing with you Tom) ;):D

...But it is true, lol, so that said, you did a great job, details like freckles & such I think are up to the artist. I know when I do portraits, I try to stay true to life but I also "idealize" the person to some extent. Like if they have bad acne or something I usually leave that out or at least "smooth it over." (if that makes sense) with shading. Ultimately, what you draw is up to you, it's your perception of what you see, so in that sense there is no "right" or "wrong," although I think what you drew is quite right. :)

Keep up the good work!


Oh & 1uc: I'm having the hardest time getting you on paper! :banghead Not sure why that is, but I just can't get your contours quite right. Whatever it is, I am working on it, & as soon as my pencil hand starts cooperating I'll have a sketch of you. Trying to do everyone that drew me first, then I'll do anyone else tha tposted a pic.

Maybe you could get some more difference in the way you draw the ears since they look quite alike on all your characters. It'll add some extra small personality bits to it.
