In light of the fact that Bauhaus Software withdrew the "Mirage" software from the market in October 2007 and because the lawsuit between Bauhaus and TVPaint Development Co (http://www.tvpaint.com). (the creators of the software code behind "Mirage")
was recently resolved in favor of TVPaint Development Co. , I would request that this sub-forum be renamed TVP Animation .

The animation software which used to be marketed as Mirage is now TVP Animation and has had some significant improvements since the Mirage days (Mirage was never updated by Bauhaus since 2005) .

As of May 5, 2008 , the Bauhaus website is gone (with a link to Bauhaus's new venture MyToons) and has a note at the bottom:

"Bauhaus Software, Inc. has sold the Mirage Software Business to TVPaint. Should you need support, sales or additional information regarding the Mirage Software, please contact TVPaint directly at the link below."

Ask and ye shall receive .

Cool. Thanks for the name change to TVP Animation.

This software has become my favorite 2D app. Very natural drawing tools and features that makes it feel like doing traditional hand-drawn (like the rotating drawing area "virtual animation disc", flip book, etc.) .

(as of May 6, 2008) -
Anyone who is still sitting on a Mirage license should be aware that TVPaint is currently running a 60% discount special to upgrade to TVP PRO 8.5 .

Check out my site where I have collected a bunch of projects and small clips done with TVP Animation:

hi David,

yeah, it's good to see this lawsuit is now over!

I've heard they will be present with a boof at the MIFA at Annecy, next month.
so anyone who will go there for the Festival, don't miss a visit for a demo.
:)

I think the price for the application is in Euro format.
I'm willing to bet it isn't cheap in US Dollars.
I might consider fooling with it though I'd rather master corel painter and see if I can achieve high-end animation in Painter because TV Paint looks rather pricey.

When I checked the price in U.S. dollars it was over $400. I did try out the demo and it is impressive for a paint/animation program. It even has some filters and features other animation programs doesn't have. I'll stick to my Toon Boom though.

I don't see how you could do high-end animation in Painter , since Painter isn't an animation program (there's no timeline/x-sheet , no way to time your images or sync them up to sound or output to a movie format like .avi or .mov ). Painter also doesn't have a way to do camera moves like TVPaint's keyframer or multiplane camera features. It it those animation-specific features that you're paying for in TVP . Painter is only for doing still images and it's great . However, TVPaint does still images AND animation. So, yes, it costs more.

With the U.S. dollar still getting whipped by the Euro the current price for TVP Animation (basic edition) is $738.49 in U.S. dollars. The TVP PRO version is more , but most people will find they do not need many of the extra features in the TVP PRO version. The TVPaint Web Store (http://www.tvpaint.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=97&Itemid=77) has a currency convertor (http://www.tvpaint.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=130&Itemid=151) to figure out the current conversion rate from Euros to Dollars. When you click the "Add To Cart" it will take you to the PayPal page which will calculate and convert the Euros to Dollars rate.

There is a comparison chart which shows the extra features in TVP Animation Pro compared to TVP Animation Standard Edition : TVP Features Comparison Chart (http://www.tvpaint.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=89&Itemid=78)

Herb mentioned ToonBoom Studio. Now TB is an actual animation program (unlike Painter , which isn't made for animation). I own ToonBoom Studio 4.0 and I like it and use it , but there is really no comparison to the features that TVPaint has , plus the fact that TVP is bitmap and ToonBoom Studio is vector. Both have their places. For some things vector is best , so Flash or ToonBoom is the way to go. If ToonBoom Studio will do everything you need it to do then that's great . A more fair comparison would be between TVP Animation and ToonBoom Digital Pro.

I havn't had time to read these posts, but by the name of this topic, isnt it imposible to change the name of a website without getting a new domain and moving it there? cos if u change the name of the forum, you would have to change its address, but i dont think thats posible?

It was about changing the name of this particular forum. It was originally called "Mirage". Which was the version of TVPaint released by Bauhaus Software. Bauhaus is no longer involved with Mirage and now all Mirage support has been taken over by TVPaint.

I agree raster and vector based animation each have their place. I didn't mean to make a comparison between the two. I just am so used to using vectors and the ease of the interface in Toon Boom make it a personal favorite. TVPaint as a raster based animation program does blow me away with all the paint and filter features. For those comfortable with Photoshop should find TVPaint right up their animation alley.
