What do you want to do? They are both different programs for different purposes.

AutoCad is widely used in architecture.interior design.
3d Max - Widely used in video games (modeling, texturing, animation)
Maya - Widely used in feature films (modeling, texturing, animation)
All products created by Autodesk

I've done 3D with AutoCAD but it is mostly for engineering drawings.
Maya - Widely used in feature films (modeling, texturing, animation)
All products created by Autodesk
Maya was created by Alias-Wavefront. Later Silicon Graphics adquierd Alias -Wavefront and finally on 2006 Autodesk bought Maya.

It did seem odd that they would make both 3ds Max and Maya. Their functionality is much too similar.
What do you know about 3ds Max compared to Maya that made you say that one is more used for video games while the other is more used for feature films?
I'm just curious as how the functionality of each might play part to either of those purposes.

"... An important feature of Maya is its openness to third-party software, which can strip the software completely of its standard appearance and, using only the kernel, can transform it into a highly customized version of the software. This feature in itself made Maya appealing to large studios which tend to write custom code for their productions using the provided software development kit ..."

Both do pretty much the same function, and I predict they will eventually be mered into one package. But most of my friends in the game industry use Max. Maya in the film industry. Not sure how that pattern got started but it is the way it is, lol.
But, Maya has the FBX export function that is supported by the new Microsoft XNA platform , which makes Maya great for gaming. They are very similar.
Also, I second what FerX said, Maya has integrated Mel script and now Python. This gives you the ability to code your own functions and pretty much take control of the program anyway you want. And since everything in maya is coded in MEL, it can run on all operating systems.

max was the first big successful program from the early days before the playstation launched max had 3d sewn up. naturally everybody went with max, and its been a mainstay ever since. its used for a variety of things including movies but its not news if somebody accomplishes something unique with max its pretty much expected. its like the microsoft of 3d

If anyone remembers "Starchaser: The Legend Of Orin", it was the first animated film to combine 2D with 3D graphics. Thought the 3D graphics were 3D models of spaceships created in a CAD program and then plotted onto cels. You can do this in AutoCAD with an internal script that rotates the model as it generates a plot file for each frame. Plotting them onto cels made it easy to combine with the rotocoped characters in 2D. This avoided using more expensive film compositing methods. This was done back in 1985.

Speaking from my limited experience of Maya and larger (6 years) experience of Max I would suggest that basically it works like this:
Max is better for modelling.
Maya is better for animation.
Now of course there are a lot arguments out there that will contest this but that is generally the view that is widely accepted in the games industry and animation industry.
Auto Cad is brilliant for splines and for architecture stuff. But as far as non architectural animation is concerned, you do not need it. And even if it is architectural animation you will only need it long enough to export the drawing into max/maya so you can build your accurate model.
