I was going to wait a bit but what the hell. Might as well get the nut kickin' over with. It was tough, and I mean tough but fun. So, for what it's worth, let the slammin' begin.:p :Xead: :D

Thanks bud. My girlfriend thought the ball was awfully big for a golf ball. Then she said, "where's the hole?"

That's freakin' sweet! Especially nice putting your avatar on the flag. Nice work. I have some work to do to keep up!

Vic you took my idea. I was going to put my avatar on my flag. Oh well I still going to do it.:) Nice animation, I like the flag.

I almost regretted putting my avatar on the flag. It was a bitch to animate to look right. (or somewhat right) I'm glad I did in the end because it does add to the emphasis of the movement. Slam your avatar on by all means. But F**K the shadows! Why oh why did I put myself through that grief????:Xead: :(
P.S. Thanks:o

Your flag wave is good, I like it :D . I think you could practice more on your ball bounce though. keep it up

Thanks walker. I appreciate your advice. It is however, a little better than my first bouncing balls submission. That guy still has no pants!:D :D
Great to see you offering advice to the challenge submitters. I applaud you sir.
P.S. If these guys enter the bouncing ball challenge, we're all doomed!!!!

What needs to be improved on my ball bounce? Seriously, I'd like to improve it.

your timing and spacing, ive said it to almost everyone, your ball floats.

Ha ha, how does one reply to Vic's thread. A great looking flag, huge balls , and bathroom humor. :p
I do think your ball floats a tad.

Another try at the ball thing. No shadows, just ball. Still seems to float no matter what I do!!??:(
Ball 2 (http://img106.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ball27xg.swf)
it needs to slow down when it reaches the top of an arch.

I closed the gaps on top of the arc and added a few more keyframes.

Just wondering if my last ball bounce was a bit better?

Sorry, no help here. Looks good to me!
great improvement! But every time the ball bounces, the height needs to drop evenly. The easyest way is to halfen the height of the arc, each bounce.

Thanks. I wondered how much each arc shrank per bounce. Now I know. Much appreciated. Back to the drawing boa.....er, tablet.

Well this is my last effort. I can't take no more bouncing. :Xead: :o
Bounce (http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ball20si.swf)
it looks much, much better! except... when it hits the walls, it shouldn't jump higher...
vicjperry
04-18-2006, 08:05 AM
Thanks Kame but I have to disagree with you. If the ball is moving upward before it hits the wall, physics dictates that it has to move upward again after it strikes the wall.
Throw a ball down on the floor and watch what happens, it'll hit the wall and arc upwards, then come back towards you.
I took the higher arc out, as you said, and now it doesn't look natural. (new) (http://img205.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ball24ir.swf&width=640) My previous entry looks smoother to me. (Previous (http://img504.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ball20si.swf))
Not arguing with you my friend but reminding us both of Mr. Newton's theory. Anyone else agree on this?

observation is great Vic (essencail even) just don't forget you're making a representation of a boucning ball, not a real one. The excersise is one in understanding timing/spacing and the connection between your mind and animation as exageration as apposed to trying to mimic the exact forces that equate the balls functioning.

Thanks Sangfroid. I do agree to a certain extent. I know we're doing cartoons and not technical drawings, but the principles still apply to a cartoon if it's to look natural.
In the flag exercise, if the principles of physics aren't applied to how cloth moves in the wind, it won't win the challenge if it doesn't look real, cartoon or not.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think my submissions are perfect, far from it, I just think the rules of gravity and weight, which are discussed in most animation books, have to be applied to work.
I don't mean to hash up some hard feelings here folks. Just trying to apply what I've studied. Maybe it won't mean a darn thing in the end, but like it says under my username, "What the hell do I know?" :D :D Food for thought I guess.
i just threw my basket ball on the wall, at about the angle that is in your animation, and it doesn't hop like that. It;s just like it says under my username "i buy free stuff".

I get my hands on that Issac Newton bastard I'll......
Okay, I stand corrected and appreciate you experimenting to prove me wrong.:D
Thanks Kame and ignore my crap.:) :o

haha Issac foils the plot again! Sorry vic mabey I shoulda been clearer, i'm not intending to say that somthing like physics shouldn't be taken into account especaily when it comes to observation as you did demonstrieght (wiether or not it bounces up it shows that you where thinking), but simply that it is not the focus of the excersise at hand. You can always program/actionscript a ball to resist gravity in a realistic way but to actualy say somthing with your animation is a different kinda skill for I don't believe that the projection of motion is one of pure kenetics but rather that of Bringing life to what lays dormant in the mind. It probibly depends how you look at it I guess but for me personaly I would rather have somthing that feels alive than looks dead (that's not an accusation just wanted to illustrate what I mean >_<).
But the ball is comming on realy great I don't mean to sound like a sourpuss (altho i probibly do) >_<.
