Yeah if you drop an impasto layer onto the canvas it is forever burned into the canvas. If it was on a layer you could simply ditch the layer.

There is a fix though. On the upper right there is an impasto effect toggle button. It'll turn it off on all layers, but it'll toggle back on automatically when you use any impasto related brush. I'm not sure if you remember but in 07 I did a piece for the cgtalk "Eon" challenge and I accidently dropped a layer with impasto on it with out noticing it. I noticed too far down the line to go back and literally had to keep hitting that toggle switch for the remainder of the painting. It was bugging me for weeks. Eventually I learned to look past it and only turn off the impato effect right before saving the file as a jpg for showing. Thats pretty much why I stay away from impasto, lol. Bad memories.

I started with painter only doing clouds. It's good practice, you should try it out. Some people think they are simple, but in reality they are pretty complex. You can also try a little matte start. Find a image of some coulds, copy only a small portion from that image. ex (inch x inch) place it smack in the middle of your canvas and only using the color picker try to paint in the remaining of the clouds scape. Not copying from the original but making up your own cloud formations. The goal being not able to recognize the image you started with , yet having a full could scape.

Here's the third installment, & I think final. I made & used a couple other brushes on the sky & water, & touched up on the clouds. The wall I couldn't resist going nuts on still with the regular & negative impasto pencils I made, although I did tone down the brightness quite a bit, and I hope took out enough of the extra color that was showing in the 2nd version. One thing I kinda messed up though, the top of the wall in some spots is bad, & I found myself unable to fix it. Greg maybe you can help with this - it seems when I erase an impasto section, the color disappears but the effect remains. What's wierd is I really think I erased some without any problem, but other areas I'm not able to erase. That leads me to believe I'm definitely doing something stupid or hit a button somewhere, so if so please point it out

    Anyway, here ya go:

Here's a little more work on the wall. I kept the same brush for better or worse, but I think I was able to tone it down a bit. Curious what you guys think though, is this heading in the right direction? I used a few of the sky colors & the ground color as well & went over on a new layer. Is it too much? I'll mess with the sky itself more too, but looking for thoughts on the wall for now. If anything I think it makes the sky seem a little brighter.

    Thanks guys!

And thanks for the crit, Greg. I don't mind them at all, quite the opposite actually.

I agree with what you say about the wall being too bright & detailed, it was actually even brighter than it is now but I put some of the green/brown ground color on it to mute it a little bit.

It's funny that it looks too detailed though, because it was done with one pass of a brush & then a handful of loose scribbles. Made a pencil I'm already in love with - took the 2B from painter & gave it an impasto effect & then put a slight variation (12%-15%) on the hue & saturation of the color. I'm finding it super cool & now I need to make the same one but with a negative impasto effect so I can get mega-depth.

I'll post up anything else I come up with, feel free to crit the sh!t out of 'em.

Very good man, very good. I'm glad you started experimenting with the brush creator, it's a awesome tool.

I hope yo don't mind, I'll be doing the crits in the open so others can pick up some hints as well.

CRIT: Your sky came out great, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Not too much detail but enough to start shaping the picture. It's especially visible when blurring your eyes, which is what we're shooting for at this moment.

As far as the foreground goes (Stone Wall) it's too detailed and too bright compared to the rest of the piece. At this moment you just need to get the tones in there. Incorporating new color (grey/white) will throw off the composition. But thats besides the point, cause I definitely want you to explore atm and learn your way around the brushes.

Right now I would paint over the stonewall, even if you want to keep it, paint over using a more basic, less detailed brush, as well as play around with the sky ares using the color picker and the diffuse blur.

Definitely play around with painter. Try to get in around at least 30 minutes a day till the software becomes unnoticable. Then it's all about your ideas and the technique of bringing them to life.

I'll talk you through the process of up-rezzing and down-rezzing as we start to add detail.

    Good stuff man. Good stuff.
