anybody know any rules, or where to locate such, involving using audio from a television show or movie? im willing to bet that selling a short which uses it is against some law somewhere, but is there any sort of magic artistic merit rule or something along those lines?

copywritten music for sumthin like a reel i wouldn't think is illegal,but if u plan to actual use it on t.v. or any sort of commericial use,u'd need to get permission obviously,cos the musician probably would want some sorta royalty if u make money from it.

Yeah. Generally, if you should use a copywritten audio segment without permission, your liable to be sued for infringement. But, many musicians are very flexible if you contact ahead of time seeking permission. I know the Chili Peppers never ask for any royalties when their songs aer used in film, and same with Danny Elfman for the use of his Oingo Boingo piece in American Sk8land on DS. So if you can, contact the muscian, otherwise use it anyway and cross your fingers that the musician is merciful.
