Default JK's Online Sketchbook at AF 2012

Everyone else is doing it, and I want to be cool like everyone else, so...

Enclosed are some sketches and drawing studies done in 2012. All of them need more work! I have improved a lot over the past few years; still a long long way to go. I have to make that last push to revise and fix the issues I know are there. Something about the appeal of a blank piece of paper (over fixing one with lines already on it) beckons me, though!

Today's study: the noble sandwich.

These were really tough to scan well. It kept coming out too light, so the line quality isn't great. Oh well.

If you ever wanted to know why you should PRACTICE, here is why:

Left: 2010 with a TON of effort put in.
Right: Today after finding old drawing on left, first pass

PRACTICE.

Wow JK, that improvement is amazing. It's like youre a totally different artist. Keep improving and who knows how good you'll be in another 2 years!

That's the goal!

I'll have to remember to come back and post the third hopefully best image yet in 2014.

Semi-doodled Baker character design.

I didn't have a plan going in, and it shows, but I still think there's some nice life to the character and I like the shading on his nose especially.

After watching a video online about trying to break out of your standard methods and drawing styles (using different shapes) I did this hip hop version of Clydex the Platypus. It was a lot of fun to just let go and try to do the opposite of what I normally would!

Also good to sketch in blue pen, which I never, ever, ever, ever do. So that made it even further outside my norm.

I highly recommend it.

Hmm, yes you're right. His ear was huge and old and baggy, so it was tough to get right. I'll try to redo that part at some point, thanks for the advice!

Good call, Peter. I'm going to work on some loose animation stuff today.

In the meantime, the sketchbook continues to fill and I rather like this one so I'm posting it:

There's a bunch more from last week here if you want to check them out.
