Well you have to keep in mind that on your piece of paper where you're drawing there is gravity pulling downward. The drawing isn't just floating on the page, it is being pulled by "gravity" even on the flat image. If you look at your monkey drawing, the hands just seem to be floating out there, without any real pull of gravity. If the head is in front of the hands (which it seems to be) given that he has a pretty huge head he would be off balance. He would fall forward flat on his face because of gravity. So the hands need to either be holding up that weight via his arms or he needs to find a better center of balance so he isn't falling over.

Does that make sense? I can try to further clarify if needed. This is something I struggled (and still do) with for a long time, so I'm happy to share what I've picked up. It really helps ground and solidify your drawings.

Still very much a WIP (need to work out the tail and leg positions better, I know), but here's my late entry

I like it! It feels like there's a whole story behind it, thanks to the castle and smoke trail.

Maybe he's a mutant "flying monkey" who was born without wings, and the Wicked Witch wanted him killed but the mother monkey hid him away and they built him a jet pack so he could fly with the rest of the pack...

Thanks a lot. Yeah when I saw the changes you made I noticed the hands. Thanks for clarifying it.

I know this is super late, but here's my Unexpected Jet Pack Monkey... technically not an original design since it was inspired by a certain movie... but there it is.
