Default GLOBAL WARMING : Information Thread

November Challenge: GLOBAL WARMING
Challenge Length: JANUARY 20, 2007 - APRIL 20, 2007 (3 Months)

Prizes:

Challenge Description: The theme of this challenge is GLOBAL WARMING, your task should you choose to accept it is to create an animation which focuses on the importance of Global Warming. You can take any angle you want. The animation can be funny, sad, informative or even extreme. As long as it's clever and proves a point about global warming.

This theme is an important one for our entire planet and thats why we chose it for this contest. In the past AF focused on skill challenges , this time around we opted for a more serious theme.

Rules: Your animation must be a minimum of 20 seconds long. We encourage that you make your animations as long as you need. Winners of the contest will also have to send in a 10 second clip of their animation in MPEG-4 format at (320X240) -- this is the format used for the Flipbook prizes.

FAQ and Flipbook Tips can be found here - http://www.flipbooker.com/tips

For information on the ArtRage 2 software go here - http://www.artrage.com/artrage.html

Teams are allowed but Animation Forum will send the prizes to one address.

BE CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN !!!!

Steps:
- Go in the Challenge Entry forum,
- Create a new thread, with your name, and challenge name :
example : jakiloblanco - GLOBAL WARMING
- Use your thread to keep us updated on your animations
- When you finish your entry, edit the first post in your thread, with a link to your work.If you are using Flash or YouTube you have the option of embedding your animations directly into the post, using the specific tags.

Wait, I don't get it. What's all this about submitting for flipbooker? I checked the site, and was even more confused. I just animate my flash movie, and then export it, and make an export of 10 seconds of it to mpeg-4... but then what do I do with the MPEG? Give it to you? I'm lost, lol.

Oh, and can we incorporate copyrighted music?

One of the prizes are flipbooks. Which is basically your animation on a paper booklet. It's one of your prizes, but for them to be able to print the animation sequence on paper they need it in a specific format.

I'll be glad to help out with the conversion for the winners.

Just a reminder. I ran across this post from Noob at the PAP forums from the last contest, if you want to drop in a new announcement!

You can choose a 10 second portion of your animation for the Flipbook. Currenty they can only cram 10 seconds worth of animation into a Flipbook.

I think you don't quite understand the concept of a flipbook. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I know it's a kind of deck of cards bound together on one end. The cards are still images of your animation that change incrementally from card to card, so that when you "flip" the cards, motion is simulated. Kind of what you have been doing on the edge of your notebooks for a long time, if you really have this animation thing in you.

What if you did your animation with flash and you used a script camera, or movie clips? Those and exporting to mpeg4 don't mix, unless you have that special software that is kind of a flashplayer that records the animation for use in dvd's. I think most of us don't. Is there a chance someone can do it for the winner?

I've got software that can transform any video to anything. As I'm sure a few other people have. So we'll get it into the appropriate format when ya win.

This is a good theme. I'd do it just to be able to express something.
Hope I can prepare an entry this time.

Who is voting for this btw? Because i was thinking of making a relatively anti-enviromentalist piece.... im quite against all the hype and hysteria thats being created .... and i was pondering if the judge/judges ... have strong beliefs regarding global warming ..... ?

because id quite like to do well .... and if my animation is strong but im dissing the judges beliefs and morals..... i spose it cant go down to well ..... unless the judges are solely voting on the standards of animation alone. ....If not, i might try to adapt my points of view a tad....

Caaaaaan we possibly enter more than one animation if it's possibly possible to do that possibly?

I have several ideas that I'd quite like to do but none of them can really be combined in a way that would make any form of structured narrative...

Edit/ and this compo is getting lots of attention! 12 guests are viewing right now!

rindolphus - Me and Willy can help out with the video conversion for the winners. There are numerous ways of converting flash to MPEG-4, even a screen capture software can do it. The flip book MPEG's don't have to be of high quality at all. So don't stress to much about it, we'll help you guys out.

Quikhamsta - All the judges have not been assigned yet, but not all of the judges will be animators but all of them will most likely have strong feelings behind Global Warming. (some of the judges will be from environmental organizations) I'll post more information regarding the judges once we get a solid confirmation.

myhatisoff
- Sorry bud, one entry per person, so try to incorporate all of your great ideas into one. And yes this is a great response, AF has receive a lot of emails since yesterday from people and organizations trying to get involved. We're definitely headed in the right direction.

Well dang, I was thinking about making an entry along the same lines as QuikHamsta if I entered. (although with the idea I got it wouldn't be hard to tack an angle from both sides) Yeah I'll probably wait until I get more info on the judges before going too far.

Evil Demon -The emails went out to a couple of environmental agencies, well see who responds. Some of the judges will also be from our AF community. But either way we're looking at this as a serious topic , but I don't see any problem with the animator taking an opposing side. It's your imagination and your vision. Show us what you have in mind, we're in no way trying to limit your project.

it sounds very interesting, I'll try to make my first contest entry on this theme,
but I can't guarantee anything, I've to find a good idea before, then times to make from this idea a decent, presentable piece of animation...

For me, animation and story are equally important, but to give you a lower score just because you want to approach the subject in a different way would be very silly.
You have a right to your opinion as long as you're not being ignorant. With that said, I hope you realize that the hype and hysteria around the matter exist with a reason...

And as I recall, South Park did a pretty cool global warming spoof.

ps.
I am also entering!
And I'm going traditional!
